I Just Like Making Stuff
This A-line skirt is made from a bolt of gorgeous Italian linen.
I sew mostly because I have particular tastes that I can't afford. I get an idea of exactly what I want, exactly how I want it, and when I can't find it in stores (on sale) - I make it. Also - fabric is awesome. One of my favorite pastimes is walking through a really great fabric store (like Stone Mountain and Daughter in Berkeley, CA) and grazing my hand over the aisles of cloth, taking in the visual and tangible, textural beauty. When I see something that stops me in my tracks I pause to think about what I picture that fabric turning into. Often times this process is a bit like berry picking when you're a kid: one for me, one for me, ok one for you, one for me... My excuse is usually that since I don't buy patterns and have yet to use pattern software, I kind of have to make stuff for myself because it's easier to check the fit as I'm making things up.
That being said, every now and then a fabric pops out at you like it's got neon lights spelling out some friends' name. Other fabrics just beg to be made into lovely things that aren't quite my style, but are insistent enough and pretty enough that there's really no fighting it. Some things just know what they want to be when they grow up. And since I am decidedly not one of those things, the least I can do is help along some fabric or some person who has more direction - or less ADD.
